Chikungunya and Dengue infections in Haiti!

Chikungunya and Dengue are viral infections spread by mosquitoes - including during day times.  Although there has been a lot of press reports, neither disease causes major illness to the traveler to Haiti. Haitians however may get more extensive complications from an infection because of their repeated exposure.

Symptoms for both are like a bad flu - fevers and marked muscle pains and headaches.  Symptoms may develop 3-7 days after a bite. Treatment is limited to treating symptoms.

What can your team do to be protected?

1.  Use mosquito repellent during the day as well as evenings.

Soaking clothes before the trip with repellents or insecticides, such as permethrin, can be protective.

2.  Long sleeved shirts, long pants and hats are important.
